RULES AND REGULATIONS
The beauty and continuity of Scandinavian Cemetery depends on the cooperative efforts of all families who have loved ones entrusted to our care. To maintain the grounds to the highest standards, we ask that you read and observe the following regulations.
AFTER A BURIAL
New graves are top dressed with black dirt and seed as weather permits. Watering the new grass seed is the responsibility of the family. We expect a considerable amount of settling in the first two years after a burial, and our personnel monitor this to fill and re-seed as needed, or upon request of the family.
FLORAL DECORATIONS
Bouquets of fresh or artificial flowers may be placed in approved vases – only 1 arrangement per grave. Approved vases are either permanent ones set in markers, lifetime vases installed in ground, or temporary plastic cone vases. All vases must have a drainages holes. Approved in ground vases need to be installed by cemetery staff only.
The following items are not permitted: Statuary and lawn ornaments, windsocks, wind chimes, balloons, birdhouses, yard signs, solar lights, Styrofoam, tent stakes, food, or holiday caricatures. JARS, BOTTLES, CROCKERY, GLASS & WIRE STANDS are also prohibited and will be removed and disposed of immediately. Please do not hang items from trees. The Cemetery reserves the right to regulate the method of decorating so that uniformity is maintained. Cemetery personnel will remove and dispose of any items that are in violation of our policies, or whenever any decoration becomes unsightly or detrimental to the area. Decorations will also be removed if obstructing maintenance procedures or if they present a hazard to visitors and Cemetery personnel. Faded or torn American flags will be removed regularly as a gesture of respect.
MARKERS/MONUMENTS/VASES
Families have the option to purchase a marker, monument, or vase through Scandinavian Cemetery. However, if you choose to use an outside source all markers, monuments, and vases need to be approved by cemetery staff to assure they meet our standards and requirements. Markers, monuments, and vases can only be installed by cemetery staff. If unapproved installations occur the items will be removed. Digging or tampering of the ground is prohibited.
SHEPHERD HOOKS
There is a limit of one hook allowed per grave space. Please only hang appropriate items (artificial or real plants/flowers) on hooks. Hooks wrapped in garland or ribbon are not permitted. Hooks need to have a double stake base. If not using the hook during the Winter months, please remove from the Cemetery by the October 1st Fall Clean up.
PLANTINGS
Limited planting of annuals is permitted on 10 grave lots with prior approval from the Sexton. The Cemetery reserves the right to remove or trim overgrown shrubbery if obstructing maintenance procedures. Any shrubbery bearing thorns are not permitted. We don’t allow any chemicals, weed killers, or round up. If any of the sort is placed on grass you will be liable for the replacement of grass and work needed for repairs.
CEMENT URNS
Urns are permitted on 10 grave lots only. There is a limit of one urn per 10 grave lot. The Cemetery requests that urns be turned over or taken home during the Winter season.
MEMORIAL GARDENS
Floral decorations will be limited to flowers in marker vases only and Christmas wreaths. A shepherd hook up to 30’’ is permissible in garden section only. No grave blankets or planters will be allowed.
GENERAL CLEAN-UP DATES
A general clean-up of the Cemetery grounds is conducted twice each year, on March 1st and October 1st. All decorations are removed on these dates. We ask that you stop at the Cemetery before these dates if you wish to keep your seasonal bouquet for future use. Unfortunately, we’re not able to store or save decorations for you. GRAVE BLANKETS must be removed from the Cemetery before March 1st. If the Cemetery removes and/or disposes of any grave blankets, there will be a $10.00 removal fee per blanket due to increased disposal fees.
WHY DECORATIONS ARE REMOVED
Cemetery regulations are like city zoning regulations, which maintain the appearance and welfare of the community. Cemetery regulations work in the same way to preserve the appearance and welfare of this sacred area. Decorations that become unsightly or withered are removed. Someone must make this decision and we hope you’ll appreciate that we make it for the good of all and to alleviate clutter and obstruction of adjacent spaces.
THEFT/DAMAGE
While we do everything in our power to protect all personal property placed within the Cemetery, please understand we are not responsible for any decorations, markers or vases that may become damaged, misplaced, or stolen. Scandinavian Cemetery is not responsible for damage to any markers, vases or plantings due to regular maintenance or when graves are opened for interments.
At SCANDINAVIAN CEMETERY, we strive every day to provide support, conduct business with compassion, and respect the significance of every life lived. Know that we’re here to give the guidance you deserve and are committed to maintaining a beautiful and peaceful environment for your loved one’s final resting place that will last for generations to come.
We want to thank all the families who have helped keep our grounds beautiful by following the guidelines established herein.
