STURE HENNING SIGURD LINDELL, 91 ROCKFORD - Sture Henning Sigurd Lindell, 91, of Rockford passed to his Savior Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, in Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center. He had a full life beginning with his birth in Tranas, Smoland, Sweden in 1920. He spent his childhood on a farm in Tranas and his fondest memories of Sweden were the outdoors, working on a small farm and skating with wooden shoes to school over frozen lakes. In 1929, at the age of nine, Sture immigrated to America on a steamer, an only child, with his parents - Henning, his father, a seasoned cabinet-maker, and Lucinda, his mother. They settled in Rockford near Seventh Street and became involved in the Swedish Covenant Church. He attended Lincoln School and began working at Rockford Screw Products in his teens, before enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres. After the war, he married his hometown sweetheart, Clarice Marie Johnson in 1946, and went back to work for Rockford Screw Products until his retirement. A member of the "Greatest Generation," he was a renaissance man with unlimited interests. His passions included his family's wellbeing, mechanics, electronics, carpentry (he built his own house for his new bride on a budget that included recycled materials from Camp Grant), gardening and horticulture, golfing, fishing, traveling and camping with his family and close friends. He was an inspiration to everyone he met with his calm demeanor, wry humor, and his love of life. His legacy will be his love and deep understanding of family. Sture was always active in the First Evangelical Covenant Church and the Salvation Army. His faith and call to service were an inspiration to both congregations throughout his life. He is survived by children, Constance (Hans) Fleissner, Kristine (Jack) Bell and Bob (Mary) Lindell; grandchildren, Andrea (Penny) Strom, Brandi (Steve) Koltun and Keith Bell; twin great-granddaughters, Elin and Avery; brother-in-law and best friend, Clifford Johnson; and sister-in-law, Constance (Luis) Vallejo. Predeceased by wife, Clarice; and infant son, George. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to his dear friend, Vi Hollister, for her friendship and support. Memorial service at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in the Salvation Army Rockford Temple Corps, 500 S. Rockford Ave., with Maj. Everett Jordan officiating. Private family burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Salvation Army or the Conservation Land for Conservation Trust Fund.
