Obituary

Vernon Oliver Ray, Sr., our beloved Dad, Pops, Granddad, Great-Granddad, and faithful servant of God passed from this life on September 8, 2025 in his home in Fort Myers, Florida. He was 97 years old. He was dearly loved by all who knew him and was known for the ready smile he had for everyone. Vernon lived a life devoted to his wife, his family, and his heavenly father, showing kindness and gentleness to all he met. He and his dear wife, Bettye, opened their home to countless people throughout their married life sharing delicious meals, fellowship, and laughter with hundreds of friends. You always felt special when you came to the Ray home. We will all miss the stable presence and love he provided to all of us.

Vernon Oliver is survived by his daughter, Gloria (Stan) Gregory, son, Oliver (Amy) Ray, grandchildren Josh (Brooke) Ray, Jon Ray, Ashley Gregory, Jessica (Grant) Dasher, Grant (Ryan) Gregory and Quin Daughtry, greatgrandchildren Sophia, Oliver, Lucy, Crosby, Evangelin, Cohen, Allison, and Eliza. He is also survived by one sister, Barbara (Carroll) Callahan. Predeceased by parents Vernon and Ona Ray, and sisters, Erma, Betty, and Shirley and one brother, Ulysses.

A graveside ceremony will be held Monday, September 15, at 11:00 a.m. in the Scandinavian Cemetery in Rockford, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Helping Hands Pantry, 7620 Elm Ave., Machesne
