Obituary

ohn Andrew Satre, son of the late Art and Esther Satre was born on April 25, 1950 in Rockford, Illinois and passed away peacefully in the arms of his husband Richard “Richie” Rodriguez and close friend, Terri Archibald (Hunt) on September 8, 2025. John graduated from Harlem High School, furthered his education at Rock Valley College, and achieved his AA degree at San Francisco City College. John worked at Swedish American Hospital as a psychiatric technician, where he learned valuable communication skills that would set a path for his lifelong interest of working with many people from around the world.

After moving to San Francisco, John worked in the hospitality industry and was proud to serve for 50 years. During that time, John worked at the former Hotel Stewart, the Marriott Fisherman’s Wharf, and Grand Hyatt hotels. He started out as a bellman and over the years transitioned to a concierge.

John’s interests were traveling, collecting antiques and memorabilia, attending theater, gardening, and his love of animals. In addition, he kept busy restoring his beautiful 1912 Edwardian house on Bartlett Street in San Francisco together with Richie.

John and Richie got to celebrate 42 wonderful years together and built a large community of friends and family with whom they surrounded themselves. Their love and devotion for each other was a testament to what love looks like when it’s lived fully and fearlessly.

John was a constant source of laughter and wisdom; his stories will echo in our hearts forever and his love for friends and family was limitless. John taught people how to celebrate life by example through his caring, loving, and generous spirit, as evidenced by having hundreds of friends and family visiting him in his final weeks. His passing has left a void in the hearts of many whose lives were touched by him.

John is survived by his husband Richie, along with his brothers Stephen Satre, Dan Satre (Gwen), and Jim Satre (Kay). He was preceded in death by his brother David Satre.

His memory lives on with his nieces and nephews: Tom Satre (Kathy), Andy Satre, Luke Satre (Stephanie), Matt Satre (Blanca), Erika Smith (Edward), Sarah Satre (Rodrigo), Candice Lingel (James), Nate Schneider (Jenny), Janelle Keily (Gary), Jamie Amundson (Matt), and Tyler Satre (Maddie). His nephew Mike Satre preceded him in death.

In addition, John leaves behind 19 great nieces and nephews, including the newest member of the family – Maximo Sebastian Lozano Satre, born to Sarah Satre & Rodrigo Lozano.

John requested cremation, and his ashes will be scattered in a private family ceremony. Memorial services will take place in San Francisco, CA at Drisoll's Valencia Street Mortuary. Date to be determined.
