Virginia Clare Berthiaume (née Ryan), 84, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2025, in Rockford, Illinois.
Born on June 21, 1940, in Rockford, Virginia was an active resident of the community she cherished. She graduated from Rockford West High School before continuing her education at Northern Illinois University. Her professional career was marked by dedication and service, including roles as a policy writer for Liberty Mutual Insurance, office manager at Starlight Theater, and cherished assistant to Monsignor Wahl at St. Edward's Parish.
Virginia’s faith was the cornerstone of her life. A devoted member of St. Edward's Catholic Church since 1968, she actively participated in the Ladies Guild, adult choir, and as a lector and Eucharistic minister. She also shared her faith as a CCD teacher, guiding young parishioners in their spiritual journeys. Her commitment extended beyond the church walls into the broader community through her involvement with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus and as a precinct committeeman for the 8th Ward.
Her passion for the arts shone through her active participation in Rockford’s theater scene, particularly with Starlight Theater. Whether behind the scenes or performing, she found joy in supporting local talent and creativity.
Above all else, Virginia was a woman of deep love and devotion to her family. She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Robert Berthiaume; her children Michael Berthiaume, Sharon Berthiaume, and Matthew (Christine Wilmes) Berthiaume; grandchildren Jacob Butitta, Salvator Butitta, Anthony Butitta, Sean Berthiaume, and Jessica Berthiaume; great-grandchildren Kane Butitta, Meadow Butitta, Matthew Butitta, Vincenzo Butitta, and Bradley Berthiaume; her brother Thomas Ryan; sister Marie (Phil) Abel; and niece Kim (Mark) Loberg among many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her son Mark Berthiaume; parents Francis and Lois Ryan; and sister Elizabeth "Betty-Jo" Smith.
A visitation will be held on March 1, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at St. Edward's Catholic Church, 3004 11th Street in Rockford. A Memorial Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location. Following mass, Virginia’s ashes will be reposed in Scandinavian Cemetery, 1700 Rural Street in Rockford.
Virginia’s unwavering faith and love for her family will remain an enduring legacy to all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort to those she leaves behind.
