Obituary

On Friday, January 6, 2023, Pearl Emelia Rubert Carlson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend passed away at age one hundred and five years of age. Born in Rockford Illinois, Pearl was the only daughter of Irma Emelia Frykman and Ernest Konrad Rubert, Swedish immigrants from Gavle and Varmland respectively. In 1940, after five years of dating, she married Ellard (Elly) Paul Richard Carlson, a fellow employee at Elco Tool and Die, who became her loving husband for 68 years until his death in 2008. In 1949, they gave birth to one daughter, Cindy.

Pearl devoted her life to her family. She was a loving wife who gladly shared Elly’s passion for fishing, bowling, and baseball. Together they created a home renown for wonderful family celebrations and parties with friends. She was a loving and selfless mother. She served as the Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader, parent support to the classroom, and annually ‘thanked’ the teachers with a luncheon. Once blessed with a grandchild and great-grandchildren, Pearl embraced any opportunity to spend time with them, and in her final years she moved to Texas to be closer to them. Throughout her life Pearl enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening, baking, and feeding any critter that appeared in her back yard.

Pearl will be remembered for her positivity, love of life, consideration of the feelings of others, generosity, determination not to be a burden, and acceptance of whatever came her way. She was admired and appreciated by all who met her, and she will be missed by many. Pearl is survived by her daughter, Cindy Carlson (Matthew Snapp), her granddaughter, Ellie Hakim (Louis Hakim), great-grandchildren, Noah, Lucas, and Kaitlyn Hakim.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Fred C. Olson Chapel, 1001 Second Ave., Rockford. Visitation will be from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for Noah’s Ark Pet Sanctuary or any other animal rescue operation. To share a memory or condolence, visit olsonfh.com.
