Charles M. "Mike" Oberg 1943—2021
Charles M. "Mike" Oberg, 77, of Rockford, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2021. Born April 5, 1943, in Rockford, the son of Charles G. and Phyllis K. (Sundberg) Oberg, Mike began a lifetime of service to others. Mike traveled the world as a member of the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of Petty Officer 3rd Class. And returned home to marry the love of his life, Judy L. Carlson, on July 23, 1965. He worked as a skilled machinist until 2000, when he completed his Associates degree in Human Services from Rock Valley College. At that time, he switched careers to become an intake counselor for the homeless at Shelter Care Ministries. He was an active member of Second Congregational Church, teaching confirmation classes and serving as a Stephen Minister before joining Bethesda Covenant Church, where he was a Deacon. He helped shape young lives as a Scoutmaster and volunteer for Junior Achievement. He was also an active member of the Rockford Amateur Radio Association, YMCA Retired Men's Club, Jail Reach Out Ministry and Veterans Drop-In Center. Mike was predeceased by his parents. He is remembered with love by his wife, Judy; sons, David Oberg (Sonali) and Erik Oberg (Nicole); grandsons Henry and Karsten Oberg; and Sundberg and Carlson extended family members.
A Memorial Service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, 2021 at Bethesda Covenant Church, 2101 E. State St., Rockford. A walk-through visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial in Scandinavian Cemetery.
